Foraging and Writing in the Wild Workshop

Yesterday I drove to Sleepy Hollow Road to visit my friend Mikaela Cannon to continue planning the Foraging and Writing in the Wild workshop we are offering this September through Armstrong Spallumcheen Parks and Rec.

I was reticent about going. Record breaking heat (35 yesterday and 38 degrees predicted today) with heavy smoke blanketing the hills and valley (AQI 7 High Risk) felt onerous. If too much, I planned to come home.

As usual we took our notebooks and pens and walked into the forest. Following the path into the trees cleaner, cooler air caressed us. Within an old cedar grove, soaring 80 to 100 feet above us, we sat upon stumps. A sense of sacred ground filled my being.

Rather than jumping into our work, first we shared challenges that seem to arise with life. We listened to one another and felt a healing balm through being seen and heard. Mikaela spoke of taking her troubled heart to the trees, asking for guidance, and finding it there.

I remarked how this deep connection with nature was the piece I saw woven throughout our workshop. Awakening our own wild, creative force, guidance, and wisdom through connecting deeply with nature and writing is something we both know and want to share.

Mikaela (wilderness guide & author) will also teach us to forage, identify, describe, and understand the properties of one wild plant each class to further connect us to our creativity and nature.

Brainstorming for our class flowed easily between our inspired kindred spirits. Our planning session was the epitome of what we want to share with the world.

If you are a writer, want to be a writer, love journaling, and\or are longing for more intimacy with nature, your guidance and creativity - come to the forest with Mikaela and I for “Foraging and Writing in the Wild.”

Hope to see you there!
