Awe Walk
Early this morning I dropped my husband at his appointment in town. Vernon was my home city for over 40 years. Walking the streets at 8:10 a.m. I felt the Okanagan heat beginning to build toward the forecasted 36 degrees. As the warm air brushed my sleeveless arms, bare legs, and sandaled feet joyful childhood memories of the valley’s summer caress filled me.
Pausing in Spirit Square, I watched a woman feeding the pigeons. “They are hungry today,” she told me. Clearly a daily ritual both she and the pigeons enjoyed.
I wandered with no time agenda, hurry, or destination.
What freedom in this simple act!
Moving through the park, I arrived at two Adirondack chairs painted with astonishing artwork. One chair – a brilliant yellow with orange and red flowers painted on it - glowed with east sun radiance. Written upon the chair:
“How wonderful it is that no one need make the world a better place.” Anne Frank
And written upon the flat arm, “Wait a single moment…”
Calling me further into present moment joy and awe.
I strolled through a walkway to Veteran Square. A 100’ mosaic, cut-glass snake walk was embedded in the cement. Walking slowly upon the blue-shaded snake winding through the park, I marveled at the salmon, whale, fish, turtle, and snake tiled beneath my feet.
Who knew an early morning stroll in the city could be a Walk of Awe?
Look for it friends.
