Pay attention.
For me, the art of journal writing involves paying attention to serendipitous, synchronistic, or unusual happenings.
After a lifetime of practice, I know my guidance speaks to me in many ways. Nature often offers guidance if we are willing to listen.
Through practicing seeing below the surface of things we deepen our connection to our life and our guidance.
When an animal appears unexpectedly in our world, we can consider what traits it displays. Go within and listen for personal connections between yourself, your situation, and this animal. Also, I read descriptions in the book, “Medicine Cards” by Jamie Sans and David Carson. As I read, I listen for inner ‘pings’ or ‘aha’s’ highlighting what rings true for me.
Before writing these insights and messages, I pencil sketch the animal in my journal by looking at the book’s picture. Although I lack drawing skills, I’ve discovered sketching the animal stirs my joy, delight, and creativity. Often rereading these entries many days later, the message becomes even clearer. If I am unsure about the message, I may write a prayer in my journal asking for clarification and await an answer.
Receiving guidance and messages offered to us in many ways is not unfounded, magical thinking. Rather, it is a practice of deep listening, reflection, learning, and honing of navigational tools for life if we are willing to pay attention to our guidance speaking to us.
The art of journal writing anchors and nurtures the connection to our guidance, joy, and creativity.
